Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart is raising awareness of water safety ahead of World Drowning Prevention Day, which takes place on 25 July.

World Drowning Prevention Day was established by the United Nations to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and to offer life-saving solutions to prevent death by drowning.

Globally drowning is among the 10 leading causes of death for children aged five to 14. Water safety education and public awareness, including the RNLI’s ‘Float to Live’ campaign, are crucial to prevent drownings and enable people to enjoy the water safely.

Beatrice Wishart MSP said:

“Playing around the harbour nearly cost me my life as a child, so I know first-hand the importance of ensuring young people receive water safety education, especially in a maritime community like ours with lots of sea-based leisure and work activities.

“Wearing lifejackets and knowing how to stay out of harm’s way on coastlines can help you stay safe on and around the water.

“The RNLI’s website has water safety advice to keep you safe at the coast and in the water.

“If you see someone struggling in the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
