Wishart marks Holocaust Memorial Day
Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP, Beatrice Wishart has marked Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) at the Scottish Parliament. During an MSP event with several charities and groups, Wishart signed The Book of Commitment organised by the Holocaust Education Trust.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and HMD is an opportunity to remember the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust along with all victims of the Nazis. 2025’s HMD theme is For a Better Future with a hope that people can come together, learn both from and about the past, and take actions to make a better future for all.
Wishart spoke with school ambassadors from the Anne Frank Trust UK, who empower young people, 9 to 15 years of age, to challenge all forms of prejudice, as well as meeting representatives from Vision Schools Scotland, Beyond Srebrenica and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Ms Wishart commented:
“The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau is a poignant time to reconfirm the global mission of educating future generations of the horrors suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime. We must also root out and challenge holocaust denial and revisionism wherever we find it.
“It was a great pleasure to speak with the young ambassadors from the Anne Frank Trust UK who embody the power of education and ensure the lessons learned are passed down through the generations.
“Meeting with representatives of Beyond Srebrenica also highlighted the continual need to educate and challenge forms of prejudice. Saying never again has proved not to be enough.
“The global political winds are blowing against the order established after World War Two. It is crucial that we hold onto openness, human rights and cooperation in global affairs and in our domestic politics.”
