Scottish Liberal Democrat and Shetland MSP Beatrice Wishart has attended the launch of the Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Edinburgh Institute for Regeneration and Repair. It is a joint collaboration with the Glasgow-based Beatson Cancer charity and Ms Wishart joined leaders in the field of research, Professor Steven Pollard and Professor Anthony Chalmers, as well as Theo Burrell, Patron of Brain Tumour Research, and journalist and brain tumour patient Glenn Campbell.

The Centre brings together the largest group of world-leading brain cancer experts in the UK to accelerate research into glioblastoma (GBM). The event showcased the incredible research undertaken by world-leading experts working to ensure new scientific discoveries are progressed into trials to bring patients benefit now and in the future.

Wishart is a longtime campaigner and fundraiser for Brain Tumour Research. The MSP also established the Cross Party Group for Brain Tumours in the Scottish Parliament last year, of which she is the Convener.

Speaking after the launch Ms Wishart said:

“Treating and defeating brain tumours has united various aspects of medicine and research and the launch event was a reminder of what can be achieved when we work together.

“After the work and effort to get to the launch, the centre will now continue the hard work of making lives better. There is a future where everyone’s brain tumour can be diagnosed early and treated, and this centre in Scotland brings us a step closer to realising that future.

“I am privileged to have been able to attend the launch which was full of hope and positivity. The Wall of Hope at the centre lists those who have supported and fundraised and I know that with the generosity out there the wall will continue to grow.”
